Humans were not meant to breathe water, nor extract the oxygen they require whilst underwater, perhaps one day in the future we will all be fitted with artificial gills and scuba gear will become obsolete until then,  "Scuba equipment is life support equipment"

Little problems can be avoided if you maintain your equipment, simple steps like gentle soaking and washing your equipment thoroughly after each dive, ensuring no water enters the air inlet of the first stage when unpressurised, sand and mud are kept out of second stages and hoses are inspected for wear regularly.

One piece of equipment that is often overlooked is the cylinder valve, only when the valve becomes too hard to turn or fails to work is it thought about. When your cylinder has a hydrostatic test, ask for the valve to be serviced at the same time, this is not a requirement of Standards and as such is not part of the test, the cylinders integrity is under question, not the humble valve.

All of your scuba equipment should also be serviced at least annually by an approved service technician competent in servicing the equipment you are using.
