SSI´s Extended Range Tech programs form a bridge between Recreational Diving and Technical Diving. They are designed to allow you, the recreational diver, the chance to enter the exciting world of Extended Range diving without necessarily having to dramatically change your existing diving philosophy. These Technical programs simply enhance and build upon your existing knowledge. They provide the components that will allow you to use the different gases, new equipment and skills necessary to complete limited decompression schedules.
For all XR programs, each student or candidate must complete a water fitness evaluation that includes:
A 400-metre surface swim while wearing a Total Diving System and stage cylinder(s) applicable to their specific program.
Water Fitness Evaluation Tread Water Tread water for 15 minutes without using any aids or floatation of any kind.
Surface Swim Swim 700 metres without stopping within 20 minutes- Using a mask, fins and a snorkel. If a wetsuit is used, weights must be added to ensure the candidate is neutrally buoyant.
Swim 375 metres without stopping, and without the use of mask, fins, snorkel or other swim aids (where required). This exercise may be conducted as an alternative to the 700m assisted swim.
Underwater Swim Swim underwater for 25 metres using a mask, fins and snorkel.
Diver Rescue Perform a full, unconscious-diver-on-the-surface rescue with a total distance of 100 metres within eight (8) minutes. Both parties must use a Total Diving System.
The intent of the SSI Extended Range Foundations program is to provide divers with a workshop environment, to improve their skills to a high level using Extended Range Total Diving Systems and procedures.
The Nitrox/Enriched Air Diver course is the most popular diver specialty course and the number of extended range and technical divers is on the rise, which means that lots of scuba divers, want enriched air and gas blends.
